Qigong

Qigong refers to movement, breath, and meditative exercises designed to improve the health of body and mind. It encompasses practices that developed in the contexts of medicine, yangshen or health preservation, martial arts, and Daoist and Buddhist self-cultivation. Most qigong is characterized by gentle and circular movement, the use of intent or visualization, and stillness in standing or seated poses.

I’ve been practicing qigong for over 15 years, and teaching for 3. Since 2020, I’ve been studying with Master Zhongxian Wu, while also learning from other teachers. I teach classes and prescribe qigong exercises in clinic (as part of an acupuncture or a medical qigong session). The forms I teach are mainly from modern and historical medical qigong, and Daoist self-cultivation as taught by Master Wu.

Qigong is a branch of Chinese Medicine and uses the same channels and physiology as acupuncture. Practicing qigong exercises in tandem with acupuncture can lead to quicker results in addressing a particular problem, and can give you greater control and investment in your own healing path.

Seasonal Classes

I teach a different qigong form in each season – spring, summer, fall, winter. Each class gradually explores a single qigong form over 8-12 weekly sessions. We typically follow the seasonal changes: spring and summer classes are more active and physical, while fall and especially winter turn more to meditation and internal work

I’m currently teaching Hunyuan Qigong in Christie Pits Park on Wednesday mornings, 10-11am (pwyc, suggested $20). To keep up-to-date on classes, join the mailing list or visit the link above.

Drop-In Classes

Drop-in classes are a way to receive individualized instruction. After a short group practice, each student works on their own exercises and the teacher moves between them giving pointers or adding new material.

If I’ve prescribed you an exercise as part of your treatment, this is an ideal way to get guidance and develop the practice. It’s also great for students who want to cover other material than what’s covered in the group classes.

I’m currently teaching Friday morning drop-in classes, 10-11am, at Toronto Community Acupuncture, 3 Munro St. — or when the weather is nice, in Joel Weeks park a block away.

Medical Qigong Sessions

In a medical qigong session, the practitioner may guide the patient through movement, breathwork, or visualization exercises; and/or the practitioner may use acupressure or hold their hands above the patient’s body to treat via qi projection.

Medical qigong uses the same body understanding as acupuncture, and medical qigong sessions can be used alongside or as an alternative to acupuncture.

Note that I can also prescribe qigong exercises as part of a private acupuncutre treatment or an add-on to a community acupuncture session.
